Matchday 1: It's Finally Here!

Walking into Tambo Airport and seeing the clock read 00:00:00:00 to go to the World Cup gave me shivers. The vuvuzelas were blowing upon arrival in the airport and it was simply ayoba time.

I literally arrived at my accommodation at 4:00 just as the beautiful South African anthem was ending. As you heard here first, Bafana Bafana will not disappoint this tournament and as you now know, Tsabalala is one hell of a player. What a goal to kick off the tournament in style.

Once again, South Africa showed that they lack a truly world-class striker to really be able to compete at this level, but they can still squeeze through. Sadly, one of their stars Teko Modise had a howler of a match.

Mexico were rampant in the first 10 minutes and I don’t know why they didn’t continue to press. As usual, Gio Dos Santos was the focal point of attack and looked threatening. The nation was delirious after South Africa’s goal, but the vuvuzelas outside went silent after Mexico equalized.

I don’t think it’s a bad result for either squad as it leaves them in a position to both advance as I think they both will.

On to France Uruguay, is there really that much to say? A bore draw in a beautiful stadium. Silly red card by Uruguay, missed opportunity by France.

You can’t tell me that inserting Gignac needing a goal is a better option that inserting Benzema. Could have used the class of Nasri as well.

Takeaway from Day 1: South Africa’s home support is legit and will push them through to the knockout phase. Also, France will not come remotely close to lifting the trophy this tournament.
